Vancouver-based PolyMet proposes to mine copper, nickel, cobalt, and precious metals in the Duluth Complex, one of the world’s largest undeveloped precious metals reserves. PolyMet would develop an open pit mine and process the ore at the former LTV Steel Mining taconite plant near Hoyt Lakes, MN that closed in 2001.
The minerals are contained in sulfide formations, and exposing that rock to air and water poses potential environmental damage to ground- and surface water. The mine site includes the Superior National Forest, extensive wetlands and is part of the St. Louis River watershed.
PolyMet maintains the sulfides are in low concentrations and can be contained.
Public meetings to gather written and verbal comments on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement will be held:
* Wednesday, Dec. 9, Memorial Gymnasium, Mesabi East Schools, 601 North First Street West, Aurora.
* Thursday, Dec. 10, Schwan Center, National Sports Center, 1700 105th Avenue Northeast, Blaine.
Both meetings start at 7 p.m. and will be preceded by open house sessions beginning at 5 p.m.
Comments on the Draft EIS will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010.
The EIS may be viewed on the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources' Web site.
